Increasingly, novel digital technologies are being adopted in the battle against counterfeit. From secure documents to branded products, high resolution coding, chaosmetrics and other digital techniques are becoming an integral part of security print and the authentication toolkit.

While there are a variety of approaches, these are built on inkjet and toner technologies that are themselves advancing rapidly, with a diversity of inks, presses and software that offer multiple possibilities. We are recruiting expertise across these domains to develop novel solutions.

But this isn’t just about utilising or adapting existing technologies. This is about undertaking novel research to push digital print and related technologies beyond their current limits. In fact, this will create the inherent security that keeps security solutions out of reach of the counterfeiter.

De La Rue is a business with a unique heritage and history of notable innovations. We are the world’s largest commercial security printer, creating products and services that are truly iconic. We produce banknotes, passports and tax stamps that underpin trade, travel and national security in more than 150 countries. Around the world, governments, citizens and brand owners rely on our security designs and products to create and sustain a robust level of assurance and trust.

We are looking for an innovative, capable and determined Digital Print Quality Engineer who is looking for an intellectual challenge in a real world environment. You will need to be rigorous, whilst at the same time demonstrating the curiosity to explore what others may see as impossible.

You will take responsibility for specific activities within the digital security and print team, including the development of cutting-edge concepts, techniques and solutions. You will be part of a larger Materials Development department that is based in our Technology Centre. As part of this team, you will be surrounded by like-minded, skilled and capable individuals, all focused on developing innovative products for our global customer base.

Specifically, we are looking to recruit someone with knowledge of digital print and experience with print quality (i.e. resolution, impact of screening, registration, gamut control and integration with other print techniques). You will bring:

  • A strong understanding of print quality and image quality metrics with digital print - including knowledge of print and image quality standards

  • Ability to analyse print results, draw conclusions based on your print quality metrics, complete statistical analysis to see trends, suggest further experiments based on results, and write internal reports

  • Knowledge of substrate treatment and print quality enhancement techniques to improve print quality on difficult substrates

  • Deep understanding of instrumentation and methodology for measuring and analysing digital print quality

  • Ability to analyse trends in print behaviour and report conclusions through internal reports

  • Design of experiments to understand digital print quality under conditions of varying print speed, curing time and substrate type

To be successful, ideally you will have:

  • A BSc in a relavent scientific discipline

  • Hands-on experience with digital presses (ink and toner) at both laboratory and production scale, with understanding of inkjet print head and toner drum physics.

  • Knowledge of the colloidal, physical and organic chemistry used in ink and toner formulations, and an understanding of the fundamental science behind pigment dispersion and stabilisation will truly stand out

  • At least three years’ experience in the formulation and development of novel materials, ideally within the digital printing industry

  • Experience of working safely and efficiently in a lab environment

We offer:

  • A challenging, exciting and unique working environment operating in a product set and global market that is fairly unique

  • Competitive salary and benefits

  • Freedom to grow and explore what is possible with excellent training and development programmes

  • Potential for some travel (20%) within the UK or overseas as required
